The Word on Lead [Pb]

Lead [Pb]I am continually amazed at how many applications there are for lead—literally thousands. Lead is a material the world can’t live without and the growth of our business attests to lead’s importance.

There are two things everyone should know about lead. First, it’s essential for the efficient and affordable manufacturing of products almost every one of us come into contact with, if not daily, then at many points in our lives.

Second, lead is a safe material when handled by experts. Lead must be properly sourced, processed, used and recycled. When it is, lead presents no hazard.

So lead is both extremely useful and completely safe when properly handled. Remember those two things. Those two things provide the reasons why thousands of manufacturers use lead in their products.

I recently reviewed all the projects in our Milwaukee shops. The review drove home the point that dozens of customers and hundreds of individual products depend on our lead materials, parts and components. During any given month we typically have hundreds of individual lead part numbers in production.

Each of these parts has an interesting background and application. Many of these parts are likely to touch your life in some way at some point in time.

I’d like to use this blog to track my fascination with lead and with the parts we make for products the world wants and needs.

In the coming weeks this blog will explore not only my interest in lead but also the multitude of applications where lead serves to make our lives more productive, safer, healthier and—yes—more fun!

Please join me on this journey to learn more about lead. I’ll do my part to make this subject as interesting to you as it is to me.

Vulcan GMS has been supporting the athletes and programs of USA Luge for well over 25 years. Luge is a momentum sport and carrying as much weight as possible (as defined by the rules) is critical. Lighter athletes can supplement their body weight to compete with heavier athletes. Sleds also need to be as heavy as the rules allow. Lead is used in both these applications extensively. In fact, Vulcan lead was used in virtually every one of the 560 international medals won by USA Luge since 1985, including World Cup, World Championship and Olympic competitions. Thanks Vulcan GMS!
