As nuclear medicine continues to make progress in the treatment of patients suffering from various afflictions, better ways to package, transport and store doses of radioactive medicines are being developed. At Vulcan, we’re proud to be a part of that process.
Recently two editors from Modern Casting magazine visited our Milwaukee facilities to learn more about lead casting. The result was a story that devoted some space to our lead processes that build radiation protection into nuclear medicine containers. You can read the story online at http://content.yudu.com/A1t54y/MCDPJulAug11/resources/36.htm
The editors were intrigued by the lead casting in the photo on the right. It shows a nuclear medicine syringe in a container lined with lead and encased in plastic. This system provides a high level of radiation safety for the nuclear pharmacists who prepare the doses. The nuclear medicine container also provides radiation protection for the medical personnel who transport the doses and deliver them to patients.
Building on successes in making effective products for the lead radiation shielding application described here, Vulcan GMS has steadily expanded its contribution to the nuclear medicine industry. I’ll have more to say about that in our next few posts.
